The Classroom session for the Indiana State Poultry Association Blood Testing School is typically held in April of each year. We offer a class in Southern Indiana at Purdue ADDL SIPAC in Dubious, Indiana and in Northern Indiana at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.
Classroom participants learn how to recognize PT through the plate test screening process. In addition, the course provides an introduction to biosecurity, ways to prevent poultry disease, and provide better care for your birds. Instructors for the course have included Purdue Avian Pathology professors, staff and residents; Board of Animal Health Veterinarians; the Indiana NPIP State Contact, and ISPA staff.
Although this class is designed for those who are seeking new certification in NPIP Pullorum-Typhoid blood testing, it is continually refreshed so those seeking re-certification are welcome to attend the classroom session as well. In addition those seeking to re-certify their Blood Tester status can do so through our online re-certification process.
All participants will receive a binder of materials, NPIP Blood Tester Card, and a pad of VS Form 9-2 (Flock Selecting and Testing Reports).
Completion of a blood testing school is required every three (3) years to maintain NPIP Certification. Registration, attendance, and successful completion of the test during school will ensure your certification for the next three years.
Registration for Blood Testing School costs $50.00 (or $25 for those 18 years old and younger).
The ISPA also sells a Blood Testing Kit (includes one bleeder with loop, testing plate, and laminated PT Test Guide) for $25. It is not required to purchase this kit to attend the class.
If you would like to be placed on the Future Blood Testing Class Mailing List or would like more information on the class you can fill out the form located below.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN INDIANA'S NPIP BLOOD TESTING SCHOOL?
During the Classroom School you will learn:
An introduction to the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP)
Information about the rules and forms required by the NPIP
A look at poultry diseases and disease prevention
What YOU can do to prevent and control disease in your flock
A review of proper procedures for blood-testing for individuals who have previously been certified at a NPIP Blood Testing School class
This course also provides an introduction to biosecurity and how it affects you, your home, and the world around you. Biosecurity simply involves practicing proper handling techniques with your flock to prevent disease. This training does NOT qualify you to make entry into a known hazardous area. And it is NOT significant training to diagnose sick birds. Instead, it is designed to help improve the overall health of the birds in your care and provide education to flock owners about biosecurity.
WHY SHOULD YOU BECOME CERTIFIED?
By successfully completing this course, you will:
Understand how to achieve and maintain an NPIP-certified U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid Clean flock

Be certified to blood-test other flocks of poultry owners prior to exhibitions
Improve your knowledge of flock handling procedures to keep your birds and surrounding flocks healthy
Receive emergency updates from the Indiana State Poultry Association
