PEANUT BUTTER AND PUMPKIN DOG TREATS

HOW TO PREPARE

Cook Time: 40 minutes Prep Time: 15 minutes Additional Time: 45 minutes Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes Yields: 25 treats

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ cup canned pumpkin

  • 2 large eggs

  • 2 Tbsp natural creamy peanut butter (Note: check the ingredients list to be sure your peanut butter does NOT contain xylitol, a sweetener sometimes found in peanut butter and yogurt products. It can be toxic to pets, even in small amounts.)

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 2½ cups whole-wheat flour

INSTRUCTIONS

 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. Whisk together pumpkin, eggs, peanut butter, cinnamon and salt in a bowl. Using a wooden spoon, gradually stir in flour. The dough will appear dry and crumbly.

3. Turn dough out onto a work surface and knead until it comes together as a stiff ball. Roll out to ¼ inch thick. Cut out shapes using a bone or other cutter. Use a knife or toothpick to press in names or sayings like “Boo!” Reroll scraps and cut out more treats. Arrange on an ungreased baking sheet.

4. Bake until dry and nearly crisp, about 40 minutes. Treats will continue to crisp as they cool. Cool completely on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.
